Vegetarian wins suit against Malaysian Airlines for getting Chicken Pakora
Arvind Sharma, an employee of a computer company was flying on Malaysian Airlines and had ordered a vegetarian meal. What he got in his meal was a Chicken Pakora. Now, he being a "Brahmin" and a vegetarian fellow felt "cheated" and filed a complaint againt the airlines in the Malaysian court! This happened 4 years ago.
Now the Malaysian court has ordered the Airlines to pay him Rs. 200,000 for damages. The compensation (that includes interest) is for "aggravated damages" to Arvind for injury to his feelings as well as depression, shock, mental anguish and stress coupled with humiliation, loss of pride and self-esteem.
The evidence was proved on the "Balance of Probabilities". The judges name was Rajalingam.
I wonder if such a complaint in any other country would have been solved this way? Here was a judge who probably understood the pain and anguish of a HIndu vegetarian when served chicked. But those in the Western countries do not get it. I think this sends an important message to the Airlines to get their act together.
Some years back the Continental Airlines suddenly stopped providing meals for special purposes.. so all vegetarian meals were stopped (along with many others I assume). I thought that was a very strong case for discrimination of the passengers with different requests. Either stop ALL meals or provide people with what they would like to eat. In that sense, I have found Southwest Airlines provides meals that are "eat-able" by all. They have a very good selection and it is healthy as well!
