Turkish troops cross into Iraq
The Turkish military units remained near the corner where the borders of Iraq, Turkey and Iran come together, said Fouad Hussain.
“We don’t have our own troops in that area,” Hussain said. “No human can stay there, so I don’t know what they are doing.”
About 300 Turkish soldiers crossed into Iraq, without tanks, said Kurdish Peshmerga security forces spokesman Jabbar Yawar.
Yawar said the troops crossed into an area near the border with Iran, about 75 miles north of the city of Irbil, at around 3 a.m. They went about 1.5 miles past the border.
A Turkish government official, speaking in Ankara on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, told The Associated Press on Tuesday morning: “They are still there.”
