Success of Sheila Dixit in Delhi and the Blueline Crisis

Sheila Dixit is by far, one of the best Chief Ministers that any of the Indian state has had in many years!  She is a quiet performer and has done miracles in the last few years.  Delhi has transformed so much that it is hard to recognize.  In the last  years – while Bangalore is still working on the ONE flyover near the airport (and even that is a mess!), Delhi meanwhile has built dozens of flyovers and a complete Metro system!  In fact, given the monsoon mess in Bombay and inadequate infrastructure in Bangalore, I would argue that Delhi is the ONLY city in India which has a modicum of infrastructure that can withstand any thing!

Now, Sheila Dixit is after the Bluelines.. and rightly so!  The only issue is that there is no alternative for the poor to get to the work.  So, the sooner they bring inthe alternative the better.  But the price that the Delhi-ites are paying this week for the absence of Blue lines is still FAR less than what they have been paying by the hundreds of deaths that occur due to these buses speeding all over the place in gay abandon!  Here is an update on the issue:

"More and more buses are coming on the roads with fitness certificates from the government. Hopefully, the situation will be perfectly normal by next week," Dikshit said in a function in New Delhi.

Delhiites faced great difficulty for the third consecutive working day today as majority of the Blueline buses stayed off the road due to lack of mandatory fitness certificate from the Delhi Government.

Dikshit had on Friday directed that the Blueline buses would have to stay off the road till they got a fitness clearance from the government.

Of a total 3,616 Blueline buses, a little over 1,000 plied while DTC deployed over 2,500 buses but their combined strength failed to meet the communters’ demand during early hours.

"We are taking several steps and the situation has been improving gradually," Dikshit said.

Admitting that overspeeding by Blueline buses had become a matter of great concern for all since it took many lives on the roads, she said had there been control over speed, there would have been no necessity to install the ‘speed governor’ on the buses.

"We had no idea how careless they are. They have no right to overspeed and endanger the lives of people. They had no control over speed, so we had to intervene…," Dikshit said.
