Kissing Susan Boyle – to be or not to be
Remember the latest world sensation, Susan Boyle, the singer who completely knocked the judges out of their seats in “Britain’s Got Talent” and everyone else in the room and on internet by hitting square on the cynicism that plain looks evoke. No one gave her a chance. And yet she did not care about any of those things and did what she wanted and dreamed of.
In my personal view, her performance, has evoked such interest because it demo-ed the victory of an underdog with a “confirmed” ZERO possibility of any chance to even show up on any main stage! The only other victory which in my view rivalled this scenario was the Indian team’s victory in the Cricket World Cup in 1983. That was a time when the Indian team members were planning honeymoon and jaunts with their loved ones in Caribbean because they knew they would be playing a couple of matches and then would be knocked out. If it hadn’t been for Kapil Dev’s defiant dream, the other team members may well have been sitting on a Caribbean island… sans the World Cup.
In any case, Susan Boyle, in the run up to the stage said – that she had never been married and never been kissed. Now, a neighbor of hers has come out to say that the second part is not entirely true. A statement reminescent of Bill Clinton’s “Depends on what the definition of “is” is?” – the neighbor explains that 3 years back, after her 91 years old Mother’s death, Susan came to him for consolation, and he gave her some “pecks on her cheek”. And that, he believes should QUALIFY as a “Kiss”.
I am sure if he was caught by his wife in such an “uncomprising position” with Susan Boyle before she became “The Susan Boyle”, even a full blown French kiss would have become just a peck!
So, the evolution of a peck to a kiss or the vice versa, really depends on the situation and the need to sensationalize or downplay an act given how much returns one is going to get. If it means losing a wife, then a kiss can be downgraded to a peck.. and if it means making some money from a Tabloid, then a peck can be easily upgraded to a kiss.
But the question remains – will the lips which sung the “I Dreamed A Dream” from Les Miserables be ever locked with a man’s deserving lips? Mr. Smith – an unusual name for a rank nobody (lol) – thinks she will “make a great catch for any man.” With her size and verve.. the man needs to be rather sturdy to …. well.. complete the catch!
