Delhi Neurosurgeons studying impact of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra on severe brain injury patients
Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is a very powerful chant which is said to have the ability to save a person from death. The Mantra is part of the Rig veda VII.59.12, b) the Yajur Veda III.60, and c) the Atharva Veda XIV.1.17.
It is written as:
ॐ त्र्य॑म्बकं यजामहे सु॒गन्धिं॑ पुष्टि॒वर्ध॑नम् ।
उ॒र्वा॒रु॒कमि॑व॒ बन्ध॑नान् मृ॒त्योर्मुक्षीय॒ मा ऽमृता॑त् ।
oṃ tryambakaṃ yajāmahe sugandhiṃ puṣṭi-vardhanam
urvārukam iva bandhanān mṛtyor mukṣīya mā ‘mṛtāt
It is said that Rishi Markandeya was the origin of this Mantra. You can listen to the chant of the mantra recited 108 times by 21 Brahmins from South India.
Is death a physical phenomenon or an energy phenomenon
When death is understood to be a physical phenomenon then such an eventuality may not be understood. But if death, as life, is understood as an energy phenomenon, then one could understand how a certain arrangement of sound could alter things. We did discuss the strange situation in a clinic in Rhode Island where Oscar the cat has correctly predicted the deaths for last 10 years now.
You can read about the story of Oscar here – Cat who detects Death and the question – What is Death?
Ram Manohar Lohia Mahamrityunjaya mantra study
The study is being done in Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia hospital and is funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research. The head of the neurosurgery department, Dr. Ajay Chaudhary and his team are conducting this study.
It has been a 3 years study which is in its last phase now.
40 patients with head injuries and a score between 4 and 8 on the Glasgow scale (meaning severe coma) were selected for the study.
The Glasgow scale measures the “level of consciousness in a person following a traumatic brain injury.” It is used to understand the severity of the injury.
The classification for the severity of brain injuries is as below:
Severe: GCS 8 or less
Moderate: GCS 9-12
Mild: GCS 13-15
So, all the selected patients were in a state of severe coma.
For the study, the RML hospital took the help of a university in Delhi called Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha. They impart education in traditional Sanskrit.
The head of medical astrology at that university worked personally to fine-tune the process and the mantra for this study. A detailed methodology was followed.
“Their head of department of medical astrology was very interested and fine-tuned the Mahamrityunjaya chant for our project,” Kumar said, referring to the Vidyapeetha. “The name of the patient, date of birth, place of birth and gotra”—a Hindu system of patrilineal kinship—“were included in the chant.” A professor from the Vidyapeetha came with Ganga jal—water from the Ganga River—to do shuddhi, or purification, for the selected patient, and then offered the prayer on the patient’s behalf at a temple in the Vidyapeetha premesis. Meanwhile, at the RML hospital, Kumar took blood samples before and after the seven-day prayer period. (source)
The 40 patients were divided into two groups, where the prayers were administered for one group and not the other. The entire study has been conducted for three years from October 2016 to April 2019. Patients’ relatives for whom the prayers were administered, gave written permission to do so.
The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra was recited for 1.25 lakh times over seven days for every one of those 20 patients. The prayers started within 24 hours of the brain injury.
The author of the study, Dr. Ashok Kumar has suggested that the study has shown that the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra did impact the patients.
“patients for whom intercessory prayer was done showed a dramatic improvement in the Glasgow coma scale and the functional independent measure.”
Dr Ajay Choudhary, Dr. Kumar’s guide is keeping things close to his heart and says that final results are yet to come and the impact of prayers cannot be ruled out.
How Gayatri Mantra impacts mental faculties – study
Earlier a study with Gayatri Mantra had shown that its chanting improved the scores of digit-letter substitution task (DLST) – indicating mental faculties impact significantly compared to chanting any other poem line. The net score improvement for the two cases in that study were 21.67% for Gayatri Mantra and 4.85% for a Poem line when chanted for equal duration.
Conclusion
A lot has been done by the Yogis that we don’t fully understand. We have seen how simple ‘exercises’ (Asanas) of just different ways of breathing can impact the very life energies in ways where chronic diseases can be reversed. Mantras are much more powerful. Sound energy, which may have been powerfully consecrated for a certain purpose, can impact in many different ways.
Studying them in a scientific manner is an important step in understanding the work of our ancient masters – the Rishis and Maharishis. Studying the Mahamrityunjaya mantra is a good first step.
